Alumina
Aluminium oxide types and activated alumina
Alumina is the common name for aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃). It is obtained by grinding bauxite ore and processing it with lime and caustic soda under high pressure; it stands out for its hard structure and high melting point.
The colours known on the market as brown, white and pink indicate the purity level and determine the area of use. Brown alumina is durable and highly resistant to wear; white alumina is purer and preferred for precision work.
Activated alumina, by contrast, is an adsorbent: thanks to its high moisture capacity, it is used for drying liquids and gases.
