Fluorspar CaF₂
Calcium fluoride slag former for metallurgy
Fluorspar is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride (CaF₂). Because of its low melting point, it is used as a slag former in metallurgy; its name comes from the Latin word fluere, meaning “to flow”.
It is commercially divided into three grades: acidspar used in the acid industry, ceramicspar used in the chemical industry and metspar used in the metallurgical industry. In steel production, it lowers the surface tension, melting temperature and viscosity of slag and helps undesirable elements pass into the slag.
