What Is Garnet?

Anadolu Kumlama

Garnet sand refers to a group of minerals generally used as gemstones. Although this group includes different types, it is generally a silicate mineral composed of iron, magnesium, calcium, aluminium and silicon.

Although garnets are usually associated with the dark red “almandine” type, they actually come in a wide range of colours. Common colours include green, yellow, brown, orange and purple. They can also be transparent or semi-transparent.

Garnets are used in jewellery, ornaments and industrial applications. In jewellery, garnets are used as gemstones in items such as necklaces, bracelets and rings. In industry, they can also serve as an abrasive for cutting, sanding and polishing.

Garnets are also of interest in mineralogy and geology. Scientists study their formation, structure, diversity and various chemical properties. Garnets can be found in various rocks such as basalt and granite and can form as a result of geological processes.
